Speaking of group classes, there is a slight change in group class meetings! I will be out of town May 3rd and 4th, so I have canceled that week of classes (both Tuesday and Wednesday) and have extended the classes to end the week of May 31st and June 1st.

Nature Journalling Contest 2022

Picture
Last week’s nature journal group class was probably one of my favorites so far!
And as some of you have already heard of your kids attended, I will be holding a nature journaling contest!
This will be for any kids ages 5-13 in the community. So if you have a sibling or friends who have never been to my class before they can still join as well!
There will be a winner for the two age categories and I will be posting them on the website and sharing with the community to vote on the winners.
I love nature journaling and hope to share that with the students I work with as well. It’s a great way to learn any of the sciences and not to mention gain confidence in themselves!
Please email me your nature journaling submissions by April 8th, so I can put them up for voting!

Hiking Tips and Classes Growing!

Happy Wednesday!

I wanted to reach out and let everyone know some of the updates for the group classes.

This week's group class on "How to be Prepared for a Nature Hike" was a success! The new hiking enthusiasts learned the Ten Hiking Essentials for every hike, made first aid kits for their hiking packs, and even practiced building their confidence with a guided solo hike. I have attached some tips on what to bring on a hike and how to set up a first aid kit if you missed the class. I think it's important information for all lovers of the outdoors to have.
I also wanted to let you know that the Tuesday Class is Completely Full! If your students have attended a Tuesday class this semester and you indicated you would like to keep coming, you are included in the roster for the Tuesday class.

However, there is still room in the Wednesday morning group class. This class will be the same topics as the Tuesday class and will be just as fun! Message me to sign up!

What is to come in the new year.

Good Afternoon Everyone!

Hope you all kept warm and dry today! I enjoyed the warmth of my heater as I caught up on a lot of paperwork and Christmas planning today.

I wanted to let you know before the day is over  starting the second group class in January I will be offering the group class twice a week! Once on Tuesdays 1pm-3pm and if you miss it I will be doing the same class again Wednesday mornings from 9am-11am!  Please let me know if you have any questions or want to sign up!

I also have teamed up with Hidden Hills Ranch in Prunedale to offer a couple of classes on their campus Wednesday afternoons. These should be going live on their website tomorrow for sign ups. You can check those out here.

Thank you all so much for such a great year! I will see you all in the new year. Have a great holiday season.

Group Class update and Date Correction

Good Morning!

It came to my attention that there was an error on my website and my last email in regards to the bird class and "what happens after I eat?" class. I had these down at the same time and date.
So I wanted to make sure I corrected that and cleared up any confusion. I apologize for the misunderstanding.
Below are the correct dates and times for the remainder to the group classes this semester.

What’s a cell?
November 2nd at 1pm Today!

Has your student ever seen a cell under the microscope? Do they know what they are or how important they are? Join us this week and we can even take a look at your own cells under the microscope!

Bird Watching! November 9th at 1pm
Students will be learning about our local native birds and maybe even some invasive species. We will learn how to spot them with our eyes and ears. Students will also learn about obstacles birds face every day in today’s world and how they can help the birds! We will have fun trying to be birds and survive a day in the modern world and will be learning how to use apps while bird watching to add value to citizen science projects around the world by using an internet enabled device right from their own backyards.

What happens after I eat my food? November 16th at 1pm
Once we enjoy our delicious meal, where does our food go? Does it have a party in our stomach? Does the stomach do all the work of getting the nutrients out of our food or does it have help? Join us as we explore how our digestive system works and get hands on in an experiment to show us each step of the way.

Who is in my backyard? November 30th at 1pm
Mammals are all around us in this beautiful area we live in. In this class students will learn about our local mammals and will learn how to find tracks and how to identify tracks when they do come across them and how scientists document and take molds of footprints to take home for further study.

What's out in Space? December 7th at 1pm
Planets, Stars, Rockets, and what else? Let’s explore the universe around our planet and maybe even try to visit space! We will be exploring the planets and everything else up there. Then we can put our scientist minds together and see if we can get to space before SpaceX does!

Winter is here! December 14th at 1pm
Holiday themed chemistry crafts and projects will get your kiddos in a festive mood! Students will engage in making chemistry inspired tree ornaments, and use their knowledge of physics to design a mini sled and race them down an icy track!

Please let me know if you have any questions or plan on joining us for one of these classes. I hope to see you there and to explore the world of science with your students!

Open House was a success!!

Picture

<Sign of Relief> Well it’s over, and it was great!
The Biology With Berta Open House was a success. I am so grateful to all those who brought their kids out to enjoy the activities, learning booths, and bounce house.
I loved watching the kids build their paper tube rockets and launch them on our homemade rocket launcher. Your kids came up with awesome designs and definitely know how to use plenty of tape! (haha Glad I had enough tape.)
The kids loved making slime and seeing what colors they could make mixing the glue with the different food coloring dyes. I even saw a few kids add beads to their slime so it was more sensory friendly for their siblings. Although I saw a couple parents give a couple “looks” when kids started using the slime in their handmade catapults… Sorry Parents!!
Everyone enjoyed seeing Tiny Tim the Turtle crawling around in his box over with the animal display.
We all enjoyed the Chemistry experiments and all the other things going on last night!
Let’s just say I enjoyed myself probably more than the kids did and I am looking forward to it again in the future!

Contest and Free Event!

Hello Parents and Students!

I wanted to update you on some changes I have decided to make as I learn more about how to better serve you and the homeschool community in our area. This year has had some unique challenges for each of us.  I want to make my classes as beneficial as possible to each student and family that signs up for classes with me.

First of all I want to announce a CONTEST! I want to be able to give you and your student a unique and fun learning tool you can use in your homeschooling! I will be giving away a 3D printed frog dissection kit that I have printed myself and one free class of your choice! Either group or a one-on-one class of your students favorite science topic. The frog kit will include the frog, his puzzle pieces of organs and a fun interactive lesson plan to go with it if you choose to make it part of your homeschool program!
This contest will be a drawing towards the end of the semester on November 30th.
  • In order to earn tickets for the drawing all you have to do is leave a review of your experience with one of my classes.
  • When you recommend someone to my classes and they sign up you will gain extra tickets!
  • The last way to earn tickets into the drawing is to come to my open house! That's right, I will be having an open house on September 14th!
I am so excited to be able to offer this FREE EVENT to our community! An open house for students and their families to come and enjoy some hands-on science experiments, meet other homeschool families in our community, and see what Biology With Berta has to offer your student.
Come join me September 14th, 5:30-7:30pm at 750 Paradise Road in Prunedale. We will be meeting at the downstairs hall of Grace Community Church and taking advantage of their large game field for some outdoor fun as well! This will be a walk through at your own pace to enjoy the activities available.
  • There will be a build your own rocket station, chemistry experiment, an obstacle course, and more fun hands-on activities!

Last but not least I have updated the schedule for in person groups lessons and would love for you to check it out now on my website!
As always don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or to sign up for a class!

Thank you all so much!
Berta
